Labeled 3-way valve

A drawing has been made on the wall to show the homeowner how to position the valve handle to achieve the desired direction of flow.
At the time of this photo, the handle is directing the greywater to the garden.

Splitting flow

Ideally flow splitters (double ells) have a straight 2' long run leading into them for the flow to split evenly.  Note valve boxes or mulch shields holding space around the double ells and allowing for future access.

Trenching

Digging trenches for branched drain greywater pipes.  Required slope for optimal flow is 1/4 inch per foot.

Homemade "valve box"

This "valve box", aka plastic mulch shield, was made using an old plastic pot. The greywater line enters through a hole drilled in the side of the pot.  The greywater should discharge at least 2 inches below ground level and at least 2 inches above the mulch at the bottom of the valve box.  Usually a paving stone covers this plastic mulch shield in the yard to mark its location.

Greywater is discharged into this home made valve box, which is situated in the middle of a mulch basin near a large kiwi vine.

The lid of this homemade valve box can be painted purple to signify non-potable water. The color purple technically signifies recycled/reclaimed water, (treated water from the sewage treatment plant), but no other color has been designated for greywater specifically so purple at least indicates it is non-potable.
