I’m looking into 1″ HDPE from Numex that has an “eco” non-pressure option with SIDR-15 (Standard Inside Diameter Ratio). My system needs some snaking flexibility and is both above- and below-ground outside. I’ve seen 3/4″ PE 3608 pipe with SIDR-15 rating and it seems very stiff and inflexible. Is the 1″ PE 4710 SIDR-15  the right pipe to be using?  If so, how does one attach barbed fittings, heat gun?

Thank you so much!

Sorry if I’m late to the party, but I wanted to offer a tip that could be very helpful. There is a water-based, non-toxic lubricant  product made just for this purpose. It’s called Hose-Lube. It has a consistency a little thinner than dish soap, but it greatly reduces friction between hoses and fittings.

It makes assembly much easier! And the first shot of water through the system takes away any excess. It leaves no residue and has no flavor. People often recommend anything from spit to Vaseline to silicone spray.

You can often find it at marine supply stores or online shops. Often, I’ve found you have to be persistent, as employees may not be aware they even carry it.  It only takes a few drops per application, so in a little goes a long way.  Good luck with your project.

I’m not familiar with that specific pipe, but I’ve used many types of HDPE and they can snake and bend a bit. If the pipe comes in a roll I think it would work for you. The pressure in an L2L system is very low, so you can use the thinnest walled HDPE pipe they sell (but don’t use PE).

If you can lay out the tubing in the sun it will make it easier to work with.

You could use a heat gun, but hot water works just fine. Bring a thermos of hot water and dip the tubing end into the hot water before inserting a barbed fitting.
