Greywater recycling

Relating to greywater systems.

Systems for cold climates including wetlands

Year-round greywater reuse in cold climates can be a challenge. What to do with all that water when the garden's under snow? Will greywater freeze in the pipes? Many greywater users divert greywater to a sewer or septic system during the cold season, but it's possible to ecologically dispose of greywater even in the dead of winter.

After years of sometimes foul-smelling experimentation, greywater pioneers have concluded that the best way to trap grease and food particles and create habitat for decomposers is with woodchips in a mulch basin, not in a woodchip biofilter.

Laundry to landscape

Labeled 3-way valveLabeled 3-way valveIt's easy to follow the guidelines required for a no-permit system from the new California plumbing code. The system needs to have a way to switch back to the sewer/septic, not have any pooling of greywater, be discharged under 2 inches of mulch, and a few more basic guidelines.

Requirements for no-permit systems in California

Under the new (2009) California greywater code, washing machine systems that do not alter the existing plumbing do not require a permit as long as the installer follows these guidelines. (Single fixture systems were removed from the permit exemption after the public comment period- a shower system does require a permit.) This change went into effect on August 4th, 2009 and will be written into the state plumbing code for 2011.

Greywater installer's course

5-day class on greywater design and installation

Class Description:

California has a new greywater code, easing the way for simple, low cost, and legal greywater systems. Now landscapers, plumbers, and greywater installers can recommend and promote greywater systems to clients as a great way to save water and money.
