I am moving toward setting  up a urine/compost system and was wondering how the use of Rx drugs would effect my plants. My mother-in-law is on Cymbalta, the occasional Xanax, antibiotics, among a few others.

Hi,

There is a lot of research into the fate of pharmaceuticals in soils and plants from urine reuse. I’m not sure about the specific drugs you mentioned (you could do some detailed internet research to find out more) but generally speaking much of the pharmaceutical compounds break down in the soil, and a very very small amount is uptaken by plants (trace amounts). This trace amount should not have any negative affect on the plants or people who may ingest them. That said, you could always use the fertilizer on non-edible plants if you have any concerns.
