What building codes should I be concerned about prior to purchasing a stand alone composting toilet for residential indoor use in a home with a working traditional toilet already in use? Are there permits that are needed to be obtained?

Hi Jennifer,
I’m not sure about Michigan codes for a composting toilet as an addition to an existing flush toilet. This document has info about outhouses and other nonflush toilets, but not composting. If there isn’t a code for your situation, than you are probably fine just doing it (you can check into backyard composting regulations) so long as you don’t create a nuisance, keep composting isolated, and have the standard flush-toilet. You could call your county’s Dept of Environmental Quality and ask them this question.
Best,
Laura
