Hello. I’m trying to design a gray water system from laundry to collection barrel then garden.
I don’t want to burn out the pump on my 25 year old whirlpool washer. What is the best drain pipe diameter for project? I’ve seen from 1”-2” diameter suggested.
Would it be helpful to raise the gray water drainage pipe higher? That way the discharge hose is higher closer to the washer pump and gravity will help drain to the barrel?
And how close can a 90 degree elbow be placed to the gray water drain connection?
Thanks for any insights you can share,

Hi,
I would recommend keeping the pipe the same diameter as your washer discharge hose, which is probably 1″. How far are you traveling to the barrel? I’m not visualizing where the water would flow from the washer to the barrel, so I can’t answer your second question. If you want to explain more, or draw a quick sketch, I can review it. You should be able to locate a 90 anywhere on the barrel, or connection to the washer drain hose.
Good luck with your system!
