I recently set up a simple laundry to landscape system that flows from the washing machine to a 35 gallon, 1-foot-above ground holding tank and from there into a series of garden hoses with about 8 to 10 feet of gradual elevation drop to the target landscape. The system seems to be clogging from gunk in the water that collects at bottom of tank and stops outflow. Is there a cheap and or easy effective inline filtration mechanism? Should filtration be before the tank or at the outflow bib? Also, I was not anticipating the organic smell from the tank. Is there a way to clean and then control the smell without using fresh water? I’m on a well in NorCal so fresh water is scarce.

Hey there Bruce Todd. Im posting not really as an answer..but more like maybe idea sharing. I’m shocked when I read ur question….your doing it just about EXACTLY like I have mine set up. Ok so first, I have an LG ventless Washer/Dryer in one, it works good. But I want to use the GreyWater for my garden I’m trying to grow. I have the hose going outside the window and into one of those big blue 55 gallon plastic barrels. Which is about 1-2feet off the ground (I built a stand for it). There is a spigot on the barrel which I plan on just using to fill my watering can or attach a hose to it to water what needs watering.  Now….Ive been trying to figure out how to add a filer BEFORE the water gets into the barrel. Ive got a few ideas. I’m right there with u tho…I thought of this being a “simple” idea. To me this is much simpler than a whole irrigation system….which I can’t do since I rent my place here in Oakland, Ca.  I just signed up with this site just to comment to you…becuz I’ve never heard or seen anyone else do this the way I did….i think we got something here…we can make this a REAL invention! Hahaha….I don’t know if there’s a way to maybe  swap emails or something. I would love to share what ideas ive got going. And maybe we can figure this “simple” thing out. Otherwise I’ll post pix of the ideas I got to get this problem fixed. And maybe u can do the same. Thanx and hope to hear back from u soon. Take care.

Hi Bruce,

There are lots of things you could do to try and filter the water, but I’d recommend a different approach.

If you’re able to redo the system and install a laundry-to-landscape system (no tank) you would avoid the problems you are describing. You’d connect the washer hose directly to a diverter valve, and then to 1″ pipe and tubing, to 1/2″ outlets. With this system the washer will pump/push the greywater, with its lint and dirt, through the tubing and out into your landscape. If you use mulch basins, shallow basins filled with wood chips, the lint/debris will be filtered in the landscape and will decompose without you having to do a lot of maintenance.
