We have been having some trouble with grease from cooking oils building up on top of the woodchips that we use as a filter for our system.  At this point, the chips need to be changed out every week or two.  We have been considering a grease trap, but I hear they can create foul odors.  Anyone have experience that they could share here?  Or any other ideas for grease?  Diverting to septic/sewer is not an option in our situation.  Thanks!

Thank you, Laura. Any experience with grease traps in a branched drain system?

Hi everyone. I have a question about filtering of greywater. I want to install macerating toilet, so can greywater be used after it for making biofertiliser? And what should I do with greywater next? Do I need a filter?

Hi Scott,

I had the same problem when I used to try to filter all the water in one filter. What worked for me was to spread out the flow in a branched drain system, so each outlet had 1/4th the total flow, so each mulch basin wood chip filter just got 1/4th the amount of water. With this set up I only had to change the wood chips twice a year. The frequency of maintenance also depends on the amount of flow, so if you have a lot of water you may want to spread it out into 6 outlets instead of 4.

Good luck with your system!
