looking for alternatives to bark chips for trenches around fruit and nut trees and berries. not pleased with characteristics of local bark mulch. also using filbert shells. looking for low/no cost alternatives.

Wood chips work well. If you purchase wood chips there are a lot more varieties and different aesthetics then you can get for free from an arborist. Anything that is finely chopped or shredded breaks down quickly and so isn’t a great option for greywater mulch basins.
