I’m collecting water from my kitchen sink. I have the pipe go directly outside and into a bucket. I don’t put any food into the garbage disposal. I wipe all dishes prior to rinsing. I am using soaps that are recommended. This is not the best solution, but I reused 25 gallons in just 2 days. What are the risks collecting the water in the bucket and using it on plants? Is there any contamination risk to my dogs? The don’t drink the water nor do they go near the plants that  water with greywater.

Grey water can pretty well be used for planters, but after basic level of treatment. Otherwise our plants may have to bear the brunt of soapy discharge getting accumalulate on the top layer and the soapy contects choking the soil content!

When people talk about risks from using greywater on plants and in the yard there are two different potential risks.

1) Risks to plants. If you use soaps containing salts and/or boron they can build up in the soil and damage the plants. Make sure to use “plant friendly products”.

2) Risk to people from direct ingestion of greywater. If someone is sick and their germs get into the water and another person directly contacts the water and ingests it, then they could get the germs into their body and get sick. This is obviously an extremely unlikely way for someone to get another person in their home sick, since they will most likely pass on germs by having direct contact in the home. But to be safe (and follow state guidelines) greywater shouldn’t touch the edible portion of any plant.

Sounds like your dog doesn’t have access to the water and isn’t drinking it, so merely using it for irrigation would have no harmful affects for the dog.
