Can swimming pool drainwater be reused directly for landscape irrigation or toilet flushing, or would it require further treatment first? How long could the pool drainwater be stored?
In our jurisdiction, commercial/public pools are required to drain 20L/bather/day and replace with potable water. This can amount to several m3/day for a community recreation centre. Standard practice is to discharge to sanitary drain. This drainwater is chlorinated water (likely ~ 4 ppm free chlorine), and will include whatever Total Dissolved Solids percentage that has accumulated in the pool.

Hi Robin,
I don’t have experience with pool water recycling systems but it seems like there are systems for this. I would check out what people are doing in the southwest. WaterCASA has info about water conservation, including pool water recycling

Also, there are reverse osmosis systems for pool water. With this type of system you do have to replace some of the water, but only around 30%, the rest is recycled back into the pool after cleaning.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,
Laura
