hello, i was wondering why the second standpipe system in your book uses the 1 1/2” branched drain gravity system not 1” hdpe? Does it lose pressure? We won’t be connected the sewer at all and i was going to put the machine hose into a standpipe and send it to the downward sloping landscape via 1” hdpe and follow the normal L2L system. Is that wrong? Do i need to keep the system “closed” and use an aav? Sorry, i think I’ve misunderstood the venting, thanks for your help, Loretta

Hi Laura, thanks so much for replying. I think i was trying to go a bit mix and match! Thanks for putting me back on the right path. I’ll go L2L and keep the system closed. The book and this forum are great. Thank you !

Hi Loretta,

Using a 2nd standpipe is a way to deliver the water to the landscape via gravity, using larger (1.5″) rigid ABS piping.

A different system, a “laundry-to-landscape” system, maintains the pressure generated from the washing machine pump by keeping a closed system, using 1″ pipe and tubing.

You need to chose one method. If you put your washer hose into a standpipe (losing the pressure from the pump) then you’ll need to install a gravity-flow, branched drain system. If you want to install a laundry to landscape system, using 1″ tubing, you will not use a standpipe.

A L2L system is much easier to install and to distribute the water than the gravity-flow, branched drain system. To install the L2L system you can connect your washer discharge hose  to a tee, with the AAV on top and the side of the tee going out into your landscape, using 1″ tubing to distribute the water. Basically, you’ll follow the instructions in my book but since you don’t have a sewer connection you won’t need a diverter valve.
