Hello. I have a laundry to landscape systems with 5 mulch basins that waters asparagus, with a mulberry and loquat nearby. It’s been at least 2 years since I’ve cleaned/replenished the woodchips in mulch basins :/. I HAVE cleaned out inside the irrigation box and tested to make sure the water flows. A couple years ago I also put some rocks in the mulch basin, but there aren’t really much chips left, it’s mostly rocks, soil and roots. I’m curious what folks think about still using the system this year. Now with the plants growing I can’t do the basin maintenance without crushing them, will have to wait until winter. The main thing on my mind is the plant roots that will be in contact with the water and mostly concerned/wondering if that could harm the plants. I know asparagus like to grow near ditches but they don’t want standing water. I know the water will drain, but the roots could be in direct contact with water for let’s say an hour max, likely less. (When I do the mulch basin maintenance in the future I’ll cut the roots.)

Hi,
If the water drains it won’t hurt your plants to use your system this season, but it sounds like it is time to do the mulch basin maintenance after the season is over!
Also, so long as you don’t damage large roots, you may be able to do maintenance now. Root size mirrors branch size, so if the root is small like a little branch that you’d be comfortable pruning off, than you can prune the root. In the same vein, you don’t want to prune too much at one time to avoid harming the tree, so don’t damage too many small roots at a time. Hope this makes sense.
Happy greywatering!
