We recently installed a greywater system onto our washing machine with specs I obtained from a Greywater Action teach-in in Petaluma years ago. We used all 1″ pipe. The air-venting-vacuum-relief-valve squirts water out initially with the first rush of water each time the pump is activated, with two cycles of the pump total per load, water expelled is about 1/4 cup per load. I put a water capturing system around the pipes (cut up plastic milk jug wrapped with wire) to try and salvage the system, but it seams unsustainable, having to pour off the water for every wash and exposure to greywater. We already raised the pipe the valve is on 3′ above washer to see if gravity would help, nope. IS THERE A “WATER TRAPPING” VACUUM RELEIF VALVE THAT YOU KNOW OF? I called Pace and they hadn’t heard of anything (though the person I talked to may have been a novice with greywater). Perhaps my vacuum relief valve is faulty somehow. I thought the ball inside was supposed to keep water form ever coming out, true? Last resort will be to punch another hole in wall to reroute the relief valve pipes outside where is can squirt to it’s hearts content. HELP!

That is not supposed to happen! Either you have a faulty valve, or the wrong kind.

It should be called an “auto-vent” or “air admittance valve” and threads into a 1.5″ female coupling. Here is one type that works.

You will need a bushing to adapt from 1″ to 1.5″ for this valve. There are pictures on this site of how to do it, and in the resources we mention, but if you cant’ find it LMN and I can post.
