In an urban setting it is hard to get a reliable source of bulking material. Is it OK to use shredded mixed paper if it includes glossy junk mail, magazines, etc??

Hi,
Shredded paper would compost fine, but I have a sense it wouldn’t be great cover material for an indoor toilet. I haven’t used it though, so you could try and see! What does work well is wood chips. They are typically easier to get in a city then sawdust, and they are a good cover and keep odor down. They don’t compost very quick, so your finished product will still have lots of wood chunks in it, which isn’t a problem, just something to be aware of. I have also used coffee grounds (you can usually get a lot from a cafe if you leave them a bucket), and shredded leaves.
