Our front loading clothes washer is in the basement. The window is 28″ above the water outlet of the clothes washer. Have you found that the washer pumps are strong enough to flush the water out the window and even into a 35 gal. rain barrel just outside the window? (my preference). thanks

Most washing machines and their pumps are rated to pump up that high, so you shouldn’t have any problems going into a barrel. I would try it out and observe the machine, if it seems like the pump is being stressed (and the machine isn’t able to evacuate all the water) then you could raise the machine on a small platform. You can typically find the ratings for the pump in the users manual, it will tell you the maximum height of the standpipe, which is how high they recommend that particular machine pumping up.
