For a new, ground-up residential construction project in Los Angeles, we would like to install a greywater irrigation system. We plan to send the greywater to a storage tank and pump it out to mulch basins in the landscape. We will be irrigating a hedge, trees, and subsurface for a lawn area.

My question is – how do you determine how much potable water to send to these areas on a daily basis, because they amount of greywater fluctuates daily and must be used within 24 hours of discharge? When you go out of town, do you switch to 100% irrigation from potable water? How do you decide where the greywater goes in the landscape if you are sending it to several different landscape areas around the yard that are decent in size? Does the water go to everything at once or one area at a time? I’m having trouble finding this kind of information online.

Thank you so much!

Hi Kira,

Sorry for the slow reply to your question. I don’t have a quick answer so I’ll direct you to some resources. Seems like you’re wanting to know about the pros and cons of various system designs. My book, Greywater, Green Landscape, goes through the design process and it could help orient you to greywater irrigation. The system you’re describing is more complex and you’ll probably want a professional installer, who could help you with these questions. There are typically a few options and different ways to accomplish the goals of reusing greywater and having a nice landscape, so there won’t be just one answer to your questions.  I’m sorry I can’t be more specific.  And good luck with the house and system!
