I would like to set up greywater to a washing machine. I am fine having just cold water. Can I just hook up the inlet to my garden hose? I have heard you should use some kind of special adapter to avoid water hammer.

Hi,
A garden hose has an interior diameter that is smaller than a washing machine hose, so hooking it up directly you would be risking pump burnout (there would be more friction and work on the machine).
You could get a 1″ ID flexible hose, or you could set up a “laundry-to-landscape” system where you’d put in a main line with smaller outlets going to specific plants. We have info about the L2L system on this site, and here is a quick video to give you the idea.

Good luck with your project!
