Hi,

I have a laundry to landscape system and I am wondering if you could recommend a laundry detergent that would be appropriate for a laundry to landscape system, that is also plastic free. I am looking at TruEarth, but I am not sure it would be safe. Thanks

Hi Laura,

In my house we use PureWash, an oxone treatment for laundry that doesn’t require any detergent. It is a bit pricey at first, but it works with cold water only, and no detergent, so you see on-going energy and detergent savings for the life of the system. https://www.greentechenv.com/laundry/

Other than that, there are detergent alternatives, like soap nuts.

I don’t have experience with Tru Earth but I just looked at the website and ingredients and it seems fine to me. I would try it!

In looking at their website, it appears that sodium gluconate is one of the ingredients. Prolonged use of this product in greywater in arid climates could lead to gradual salinization of the soil. However, as with most cleaning products, no information is given as to the amounts of any ingredient, making it impossible to determine just how much of a risk this is.

Hi Michael, You’re right, they don’t give info about how much is in the product, and people use different quantities of products so there is a lot of variation in the exact amount of any potentially undesirable ingredient. We tested greywater and soil from 83 different greywater systems a few years back, and found that the products that were liquid and low in salts, tested as suitable for long term irrigation of any type of plant. (We used an irrigation suitability testing package from an agricultural laboratory.) Because of this I am not concerned about using low sodium products, but at the same time people need to be mindful of salinity and be proactive in keeping their soils healthy, especially in arid places with a salty water supply. In very arid climates directing rainwater into large greywater basins is a practice that can help flush soils. If you’re interested, you can read more details on the testing we did here: https://greywateraction.org/residential-greywater-system-study/
