1. I recently installed a line of barrels, piped together from the bottom, 15 or so, all level. After a recent storm I noticed that some barrels didn’t fill up all the way while others did. No detectable leaks and all barrels now ventilated from the top. Any guess as to why some barrels are getting mostly bypassed while others, further from the inflow from the roof, are filling up?

2. On the same system I have a hose bib attached to the pvc pipe connecting barrels, coming up and out from under-barrel connections. Despite the fact that the water level is well above the end of the hose, though the end of the hose is slightly more elevated than the hose bib, no water comes out. When I move the hose end lower in the yard, I do get a trickle, which is all I need. But I’d like to get water anywhere in the yard below the water line in the barrels.

Wondering if I’ve got an airlock problem somewhere in the system. Ideas? Thanks. Been having a blast setting up this system and troubleshooting it so far. Eventually will probably elevate the system another layer of cinder blocks, but now I’ve got almost a 1000 gallons in there.

Hi,

1. Since the system is new and sounds like it’s the first time the barrels are being filled, I would check for potential debris blocking the inlet to the barrels. Perhaps some shards of plastic are stuck somewhere and are blocking the flow…..

2. Regarding the pressure: I would lower the hose bib as much as possible, and use a full-port ball valve hose bib, one without a restriction inside- you’ll get better flow and less chance of clogs. You could also use a ball valve with an adapter to hose threads instead of a hose bib.  A larger diameter hose will also help with more flow (some garden hoses are much smaller than others).

Good luck with your system and let us know if you figure out what the problem was!
