Speakers:

Kory Russel

Dr. Kory Russel’s work focuses on the design, implementation, and experience of non-networked water and sanitation services specifically in resource constrained locations around the world. He did foundational research and design on Container-Based Sanitation in collaboration with SOIL in Haiti. He also helped found the Container-Based Sanitation Alliance (cbsa.global) in 2016, the Landscape for Humanity initiative (www.landscape4humanity.org) in 2019, and is an Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Science at the University of Oregon. He is also currently the Co-Chair of the Container-Based Sanitation Alliance as well as serving on the advisory boards of PHLUSH, SOIL, and Waterleaf. He holds a BS in Environmental Biology and MS in Environmental Science from Taylor University as well as an MS and PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University.

Laura Allen

Laura Allen is a founding member of Greywater Action and has spent the past 20 years exploring simple and ecological water solutions. She is the lead author of the San Francisco Graywater Design Guidelines for Outdoor Irrigation, and authored The Water-Wise Home: How to Conserve and Reuse Water in Your Home and Landscape (Storey Press, 2015) and Greywater, Green Landscape (2017). She has degrees in environmental science, education and science communication. Laura has presented widely on ecological sanitation and is a technical advisory committee member for IAPMO’s Water Efficiency Standard (We-Stand). Laura was featured in an Ask This Old House episode on greywater and was the 2014 recipient of the Silicon Valley Water Conservation Award of Water Champion.

Tao Orion

Tao Orion holds a degree in agroecology and sustainable agriculture from UC Santa Cruz, and a MSc degree in Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security from the National University of Ireland. She works as an instructor in the Oregon State University Permaculture program, and consults on holistic farm, forest, and restoration planning through her company Resilience Permaculture Design, LLC.  She lives with her husband, two children, and an array of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and animals on her southern Willamette Valley smallholding, Viriditas Farm. Tao is the author of Beyond the War on Invasive Species: A Permaculture Approach to Ecosystem Restoration (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2015), and ““People as Purposeful and Conscientious Resource Stewards: Human Agency in a World Gone Wild” in Rethinking Wilderness and the Wild: Conflict, Conservation, and Co-Existence (Routledge, 2020).

Ole Ersson

Ole’s background is in computer software design and medicine. He worked as a family physician for the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon until his retirement in 2018. He and his wife Maitri have explored solar energy and rainwater harvesting, veganic gardening, humanure composting, and other appropriate technologies, and personal simplicity, from a desire to see more sustainable lifestyles, both here and worldwide. Ole and Maitri present their “experiments” in sustainable living to promote a discussion of how each of us has the potential to make significant, positive changes in how we live. In 2007 they founded Kailash Ecovillage, an intentional community designed for high value, low cost, and sustainable living in inner SE Portland, Oregon. In 2023 they started a new ecovillage project on an adjacent property they are christening Annapurna Ecovillage. Stay tuned for further details!

Ole advocates a whole foods, plant-centered, diet to restore personal and planetary health.
